Coil Basketry with Charlene Chow

  • San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles 520 South 1st Street San Jose, CA, 95113 (map)

Join weaver Charlene Chow for this introduction to coil basketry using traditional techniques. Coiling is an ancient form of basket making used by many cultures around the world. We will use raffia and seagrass for this basket. Students are welcome to bring their own beads, buttons or embellishments. Baskets make great gifts for the holidays!

Charlene’s fiber arts studio practice is focused on exploration of materials, weaving patterns, and experimenting with natural dyes. She values the meditative quality of weaving and is always seeking the creative flow. Teaching is part of her practice since basketry is another type of endangered species. She hopes to cultivate a new appreciation for one of humanity’s oldest art forms. Weaving together naturally creates community as busy hands open up communication..
