Upcoming Events & Workshops

Rust Dyeing with Mirka Knaster

Saturday, April 11th, 2026 from 10am to 1pm

AND Saturday, April 18th, 2026 from 10am to 1pm

This class is two sessions. One ticket registers you for both sessions.

Rust is an eco-friendly, cost-free, and easy medium for dyeing fabric, leather, or paper. Any found object made of iron or steel can corrode to produce iron oxide, which results in interesting, often unexpected imprints. Colors can range from taupes to oranges and browns or transform already colored fabric into other hues.

In the first half-day session, we will repurpose used cloth by putting it through the rust process and leaving it overnight. In the second half-day session, we will unwrap and rinse the dyed cloths. Then we will examine the shapes and colors that were produced and determine what kind of stitching will best enhance them.

$190 (for two sessions)

#141 Kris Jensen - Director of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles

"Kris Jensen, Director of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, has woven together a range of experiences in taking the helm of one of the Bay Area’s most niche and quietly radical museums. Born and raised in San Jose, Jensen grew up in a family of artists, but came in contact with the realities of food insecurity and housing instability after his mother passed away when he was still very young. Jensen’s father, a folk artist and interior designer, was accepting of all lifestyles at a time when that was uncommon, and frequently had friends from various communities at his house. That early exposure to diverse relationships and identities was part of what helped shape Kris’s understanding of social justice from a young age....Continue Reading on Content.
