Multi-Layered Kanzashi Art with Leila Ghasempor

Saturday, July 25th, 2026 from 1pm to 3pm

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the elegant art of Kanzashi; the traditional Japanese technique of folding fabric to create intricate, multi-layered floral designs.

Participants will learn precise folding and layering methods, transforming individual fabric squares into a stunning, multi-dimensional flower. Each participant will leave with a beautiful, finished textile piece that can be worn as a custom brooch or hair accessory, or used to embellish clothing and bags.

In addition to learning the physical craft, attendees will gain insight into the cultural history of Kanzashi and explore how historical textile traditions can be thoughtfully adapted into modern, sustainable craft practices.

Embellished & Dimensional Fiber Collage with Vicki Assegued

Sunday, August 2nd from 11am to 4pm

With access to a fabulous selection of fabric scraps, you'll create a gorgeous, overlapping and layered collage. On top of and around this collage, you'll add decorative embellishments to make the piece pop even more. Then, the collaged piece will go on an undulating piece of wire mesh, to give it shape and dimension as it hangs on the wall.

No art experience is necessary, and the class is perfect for all levels, from beginning through advanced artists.

$130 per person (all materials provided)

Transmissions Quilts is a project that makes quilts for individually nominated trans people. Along the way, we are building out an oral histories archive of interviews with quilt recipients and offering community workshops to trans and queer people. We're thrilled to be collaborating with San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles to offer a talk about the project. Preceding the talk will be a chance for trans and queer people to gather and work on a collective quilt together - no experience necessary. The pieces we make in these workshops enter into a larger exhibition that we are taking on tour around the country. The tour is intended to bring the gift-quilts and associated art objects to places our trans quilters and recipients live. Photo by Alastair Boone.
