3rd Artist Members Biennial

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is pleased to announce the 3rd Artist Member’s Exhibition in the Museum’s Porcella and Hallway Galleries. Creatives who are current Artist Members may apply to exhibit work in the exhibition, Radical Regeneration. This theme of renewal, repair, and revitalization considers the changes we have collectively endured in the last two years, and, in many ways, the changes we are still processing. In light of lessons learned after times of perseverance, this exhibition considers how moments of cultural disruption can create opportunities for personal or collective change. With this concept as a point of departure, artists may take the exhibition’s theme of ‘Radical Regeneration’ as a means of reflecting on what new ideas, practices, or politics might grow from this historic moment.

SJMQT is delighted to announce that Bay Area Artist, Adia Millett, will juror Radical Regeneration: 3rd Artist Members Biennial.

About the Juror:

Adia Millett received her BFA from the University of California, Berkeley and an MFA from the California Institute of Arts. She was an Artist-in-Residence at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Studio Museum in Harlem. She has exhibited at prominent institutions including the New Museum, New York; P.S. 1, New York; Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco; Oakland Museum, CA; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Santa Monica Museum of Art, CA; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Atlanta; The Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; Barbican Gallery, London, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles; and at the California African American Museum, Los Angeles, which hosted a critically acclaimed solo exhibition of her work in 2019. Millett has taught at Columbia College in Chicago, UC Santa Cruz, Cooper Union in NY, and California College of the Arts. Millett currently lives and works in Oakland, California.

Guidelines

• Artwork must relate to the theme of “Radical Regeneration.” Any fiber-based material may be used.  Artists may include other materials as long as textile art plays a prominent role. 

• Artists may submit up to three pieces for consideration, with full images and detail shots (only 1 piece per artist will be exhibited, if selected by the juror).

• Artworks should be less than 40” in width, and should not exceed 10ft in length.

• 3D artworks will be accepted and should not exceed 100 pounds. 

• Artwork must be ready to hang with appropriate hardware. 

• Artwork must be for sale.  The museum retains 50% of the retail price. 

• The artist is responsible for delivery of the accepted work to the Museum. 

How to Apply:

Before applying, Artists must ensure that their Membership to the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles will be active at the time of the show’s opening on July 17, 2022 and that their membership includes artist benefits. To check on your membership status please login to our website, or email membership@sjquiltmuseum.org. To become a member with additional artist benefits, please visit here and sign up for any tier of membership and add artist benefits for an additional $20. (For example, an Individual level membership with artist benefits would $50 for the membership plus $20 for the artist beneifts, for a total of $70) Artists who are already members of SJMQT, but do not have artist benefits, may add artist benefits by visiting our membership page and selecting the “$20 - Artist Benefits for Current Members” option. Please note that added artist benefits will be applied to the most recent membership and will expire when that membership expires. Please note that the Artist Member Directory is updated every Tuesday. If your website or instagram is not listed, please email membership@sjquiltmuseum.org with the desired URL and/or account handle. There is no fee to apply once these steps have been taken.

Artists should email up to 3 entries as jpg images to Amy DiPlacido, Curator of Exhibitions at amy@sjquiltmuseum.org with membership@sjquiltmuseum.org cc’d. Please mention “Radical Regeneration: (Artist’s Name)” in the email subject line.

Artists may add 1 detail image for each entry.
