Material Futures: Exploring Algae-Based Bioplastics

  • San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles 520 South 1st Street San Jose, CA, 95113 (map)

Saturday, August 29th, from 10am to 2pm

Together, we’ll explore the fascinating world of algae-based bioplastics, and discover how they can be used as expressive mediums for design, art, and storytelling. Through a live demonstration, participants will learn a specific recipe for creating their own bioplastic, gaining insight into the material’s unique properties, drying process, and creative potential through additives.

During the hands-on session, each participant will cast and shape their own bioplastic samples while experimenting with color, texture, layering, and embedded materials. We’ll discuss different applications and encourage participants to imagine how these materials might be incorporated into future objects, installations, or personal creative practices. No prior experience is needed-- just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
